These are mostly photographs from recent road trips. These are from all over the country:
New Mexico, California, Massachusetts, Alabama... I've been traveling a lot lately. Taking
photos. Trying to stay young. Going on adventures and trying to find those quiet moments
that make sense of it all.

Q: What do you like best about road trips?

A: I think photographers some times get bored with their surroundings, so road trips let
you take in new visual experiences, and it is very exciting to have all these new images
and ideas surrounding you. The constant movement forward also makes you appreciate
the time in certain places and can add an urgency to the picture making process that makes
it more fun. Overall it just seems like such an important part of contemporary photography--
Eggleston, Frank, Sternfeld... these guys were all kings of the road.

Q: And where are you traveling next?

A: I am driving out to the Pacific Northwest, tomorrow actually. But I am trying to spend
some time in Wyoming and Idaho on my trip out. It's such an amazing part of the country,
so desolate and immense. It's a little crazy when I think about it, this will be my third
cross-country trip in the past two years, not to mention shorter trips to the south and in
the northeast. I guess the road can be a little addictive.

I know that when I’m old I will treasure more and more the things I do know, moments
between friends and locations I take for granted. That’s what I'm trying to take pictures
of I guess; friends, travels, adventures, peacefulness, radness, people and nature. Being
and doing things free from expectation or any social constraints. Times when you're too
far gone to remember anything.

I can only say that I love music and I love to travel and take photos in very open, arid,
and spacious places. All of these things are so connected. (I have a blog, which is my
way to keep them all together: www.calmintrees.blogspot.com) I’ve been so fortunate
that I have had the chance to know many beautiful places that are relatively near my
home. The last pictures I've uploaded remind me of the beautiful American deserts; I'm
always looking for that. I took my last photographs in Las Bardenas Reales from Navarra
deserts, and las Médulas, amazing old ruins in León, the north of Spain. I feel a lot more
comfortable in those landscapes.

Freak, psych, weird, folk: the words that are always on my mind. So I guess that I try to
reflect that in my pictures. Like an endless Davenport's jam, or imaginary covers for one
of the most beautiful albums I ever heard: trees, chants, and hollers from Valerie Webb &
Paul Labrecque. I wish that someday I will take pictures more like that.

More things that inspire me: American/Indian mythology, many photographers I find
everyday on Flickr, sun, mountains mountains mountains, trees, people free and running
naked, tropical breeze, tribal drumming, and people's backs, always.

Magic

My work at the moment (and especially the photos chosen) talks a lot about traveling
and growing up in a long term relationship. Bon Iver is all I ever listen to when I'm traveling
and his lyrics are both magical and dark - finding emotions that reflect my relationship
more than anything I've ever heard.

Flume by Bon Iver

"I am my mother's only one, it's enough
I wear my garment so it shows, now you know

Only love is all maroon, gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she's the moon

I am my mother on the wall, with us all
I move in water, shore to shore; nothing's more

Only love is all maroon, lapping lakes like leary loons
Leaving rope burns, reddish ruse

Only love is all maroon, gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she's the moon "

Q: What is your favorite kind of picture?

A: My favorite kind of photos are ones that aren't thought out and deliberated, photos
that just happen. They are much more raw and powerful that way.

I take photos in order to remember things, and in attempts to turn reality into dreams.
There is something about a subtle ability to stop time and turn it into something more
dimensional that makes me swoon. I never woke up one morning and decided to be a
photographer, it just sort of happened.
