Jess Gough

"We could stand for a century
With our heads cocked
In the broad daylight at this thing
In bodies that don't keep
Dumbstruck with the sweetness of being"

from Emily by Joanna Newsom

Q: Why did you choose these lyrics?

A: I think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever, a continuous story that to me is
about a sort of longing for an otherness that she can only just hint at in her song. And
it reminds me of crisp autumn days, just like today.

Q: What is one of your favorite photographs?

A: This was taken on a journey from Kasol to Manali in India. The bus pulled up and was
completely packed, a thousand faces pressed up against the window... so we decided
to clamber up to the roof and clutched on for dear life whilst the bus started up and bumped
off down the mountain road. We were literally flung from side to side on sharp winding
turns, manically laughing with kind of underlying screams of fear and occasionally ducking
from low riding electricity cables and branches- all whilst just trying to have a smoke.
